Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA) is a parastatal organization established in 1992 following the enactment of the Copyright Act of 1989. Its mandate is to promote and protect the interest of authors, composers, performers, producers of sound recording and broadcasters. It also collect and distribute royalties or other remuneration which may accrue to the rights holders for their rights.
ROLES OF COSOMA
The Society has two roles, namely: - a Copyright office, responsible for the implementation of the Copyright Act and as Collective Management Organization (CMO) responsible for collective management of musical, literary and artistic works. COSOMA specializes in Collective Management, Law Enforcement and Copyright Administration.
1. THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY
All members and associations affiliated to COSOMA form the General Assembly and are at the top of the Organisational Structure. The general assembly meets once in a year to approve plans for the Society.
2. BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Second from the structure is the Board of Directors which is headed by a Chairman appointed by the Government from the COSOMA membership. Cuurently, Mr. Charles Sinetre is the Chairman for COSOMA Board of Directors.
3. EXECUTIVE DITECTOR
Third in the rank is the Copyright Administrator and Executive Director, who is currently Ms. Dora Makwinja.
The Copyright Administrator and Executive Director is responsible to heads of Departments. There three Departments namely: - Licensing; Documentation and Distribution and Finance and Administration.
a) Licensing Department
This Department is responsible for issuing licences and collects royalties for use of copyright material. It also enforce the copyright law by fighting piracy. The Department is currently headed by Mr. Mutty Munkhondia. Other key staff include Mr. Rosario Kamanga, Mr. Thomas Chirambo,Mr. Tikhale Chikanda (Blantyre Office) and Mr. Dick Kachipande (Mzuzu Office).
b) Documentation and Distribution Department
This Department is responsible for membership recruitment and retention. It also handles royalty distributions. Cuurently, the head of the Department is Mr. Lightwell Kachigamba Benjamin. Other key staff include Ms. Ellen Tibu responsible for distribution activities and Ms. Chikondi Mkutumula responsible for documentation activities.
c) Finance and Administration Department
The Department is responsible for all financial and administration matters. Currently the head is Mr. Ernest Mtuwa for finance and Mr. Shadrick Kumtengo is responsible for administration.
